30 Rhyming Riddles for 3 Year Olds

Three-year-olds solve riddles better in verse than in prose. The rhyme and the beat act like handrails — the child is carried to the end of the couplet, and the answer is waiting there. So every riddle here is two rhyming lines about something your child already knows well. What genuinely does not work yet is wordplay and metaphor, so there is none: every clue is something they can see, hear or taste.

From Emma: Read it twice, with a big pause before the answer. Toddlers often join in on the second reading and shout the answer into the gap — that is the rhyme doing its job.

  1. I am soft, I purr, I play,
I drink my milk and sleep all day.

  2. Long and yellow, sweet to eat,
Monkeys think I'm quite a treat.

  3. Big gray ears, a long nose too,
I can squirt water right at you.

  4. I say woof and wag my tail,
I fetch the stick and never fail.

  5. Round and red upon a tree,
Crunch, crunch, crunch — that's me.

  6. I am up so high and bright,
I bring the day and not the night.

  7. Quack quack quack, I paddle round,
On the pond is where I'm found.

  8. Long ears up, I hop and stop,
    Carrots are my favorite crop.

  9. Round and white, I softly glow,
I come out when the sun is low.

  10. Pink all over, curly tail,
Oink oink oink beside my pail.

  11. Tiny stripes and buzzy wings,
Sweet golden honey is what I bring.

  12. Green and jumpy, wet and quick,
Ribbit ribbit — that's my trick.

  13. Moo moo moo, black and white,
I give the milk you drink tonight.

  14. Tall and brown with leaves of green,
The tallest thing you've ever seen.

  15. I'm wet, I fall, I make a splash,
Jump in puddles — dash, dash, dash!

  16. Soft and squishy on your bed,
Every night I hold your head.

  17. Four round wheels and beep beep beep,
Buckle up, we're off — no sleep!

  18. Cold and sweet upon a cone,
Lick me fast or I'll be gone.

  19. Fluffy, white, up in the sky,
I float along as I go by.

  20. Neigh neigh neigh, with flowing mane,
I gallop down the field and lane.

  21. In my bowl I swim all day,
Bubble bubble — that's my way.

  22. Yellow, sour, makes you pout,
Squeeze me and the juice comes out.

  23. Cheep cheep cheep from up so high,
I flap my wings and off I fly.

  24. Soft and furry, button eyes,
In your bed is where I lie.

  25. I am shiny, I am small,
I bring the soup — I don't spill at all.

  26. Warm and bubbly, splish and splash,
In me you get clean in a flash.

  27. Two of us go on your feet,
We keep your toes all warm and neat.

  28. Push me open, out you go,
Shut me tight against the snow.

  29. White and cold, I fill your cup,
Cows all made me — drink me up.

  30. Round and bouncy, kick me high,
Watch me sail up to the sky.
