Letter B worksheets, and how B is actually built
The capital B is one long line straight down, then a bump at the top and a second bump underneath it — and that movement is the whole trick. A child who knows the movement can write the letter; a child who only knows what it looks like is copying a picture and hoping.
So here are two B sheets that print free from this page, and underneath, how to teach the shape and the sound without one getting in the way of the other.
1. Trace B and b
Every letter is dashed, and the first one in each row carries the numbered starting dot, so the pencil always begins in the same place. Capital first: it is the simpler shape for a young hand.

2. Find every B
Eight Bs and bs hidden among the letters they get confused with. Circle them all — this trains the half that tracing does not.

How B is built
Capital B: one long line straight down, then a bump at the top and a second bump underneath it. Lowercase b: the same long line down, then one bump that starts at the middle and closes at the bottom. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.
B belongs to the down-stroke family: h, k, l, p and r all start the same way: a line pulled straight down. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.
The sound comes first
B says /b/ — lips together, then a little pop, the way a bubble bursts. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of ball, bus, bed, banana, boat and bear — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.
The usual wobble: b and d
Both are a circle and a stick, so the only difference is which side the stick is on. Teach b as 'line first, then the tummy' and d as 'the c first, then the line'. Doing them on different days helps more than any amount of correcting.
Three B activities with no printing at all
- Bubble letters: blow bubbles and trace a b in the air with a finger every time one pops.
- Build a b from two playdough pieces — one long snake for the line, one small ball flattened for the tummy.
- Go on a b hunt in the kitchen: banana, bowl, butter, bread, box.
Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.
Where B sits in the order
We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit B in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.
When B is comfortable, move on to letter C.
Questions parents ask
How do you write the letter B?
The capital is one long line straight down, then a bump at the top and a second bump underneath it. The lowercase b is the same long line down, then one bump that starts at the middle and closes at the bottom. Both sheets above show the starting dot, so the pencil always begins in the same place.
Why does my child write b and d the wrong way round?
Because at three and four a shape is still a shape whichever way it faces — a cup is a cup upside down. It usually settles by six or seven. Teaching b and d weeks apart, and always saying 'line first' for b, makes it settle sooner.
Should we start with the capital B or the lowercase b?
Capital first at three, because B is a straight line plus two bumps a young hand can manage. Lowercase b needs one clean closed bowl, which comes a little later.
Are these letter B worksheets free?
Yes — both sheets print straight from this page, with no email and no sign-up. If you want all 26 letters in one file, that is the Letter Tracing A–Z pack.
What age is letter B right for?
Most children are ready to trace a big capital somewhere between three and four, and lowercase a little later. If the hand is not ready yet, do it in the air, in sand or with playdough — it all counts.
More letters: letter A, letter C, or the whole set on the A–Z page. Want every letter in one file? That is the Letter Tracing A–Z pack.
