Letter O worksheets, and how O is actually built

How O is built

Capital O: one circle, started at the top and travelling left, all the way round to where it began. Lowercase o: the same circle, just smaller — and it must close, or it turns into a c. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.

O belongs to the curve family: o is the shape hiding inside a, c, d, g and q. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.

The sound comes first

O says /o/ — a round, open sound, as in octopus. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of octopus, orange, on, ostrich, olive and otter — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.

The usual wobble: o going round the wrong way

Letters are written anticlockwise in English: start at the top and go left first. An o drawn the other way looks identical today and slows joined-up writing down later.

Three O activities with no printing at all

• Find circles all over the house — plates, wheels, buttons — and call each one an o.
• Roll a playdough snake and join the ends into an o.
• Say octopus, orange, otter slowly and catch the round sound at the front.

Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.

Where O sits in the order

We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit O in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.

When O is comfortable, move on to letter P.

Does the direction of o really matter?

Not for how it looks, but yes for what comes next. Anticlockwise is the movement that later joins o to the letter after it, and it is far easier to learn now than to undo at seven.

Start and finish at the same point: put one dot at the top and say the pencil has to come home to it.

What age is letter O right for?

Most children are ready to trace a big capital somewhere between three and four, and lowercase a little later. If the hand is not ready yet, do it in the air, in sand or with playdough — it all counts.
