How G is built

Capital G: a big c-shaped curve, and then a small flat shelf that turns in at the right. Lowercase g: the c-shape first, then a line down that carries on below the line and curls back to the left. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.

G belongs to the curve family: g starts exactly like c, a, d, o and q: the same round sweep to the left. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.

The sound comes first

G says /g/ — a hard sound right at the back of the throat, as in goat. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of goat, girl, green, gate, game and garden — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.

The usual wobble: the tail of g

It has to go below the line. Children who keep the whole letter in the middle end up with something closer to a q. Draw a line on the paper and say: the tail dips under the fence.

Three G activities with no printing at all

• Grow a g: make a tail out of a bendy straw and a bowl out of playdough, then join them.
• Say goat, garden, game and listen for the growly sound at the front.
• Draw a giant g on the pavement in chalk and walk along it, starting at the bowl.

Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.

Where G sits in the order

We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit G in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.

When G is comfortable, move on to letter H.

Why does g sometimes say /j/, as in giraffe?

Because g is one of the letters with two jobs. Teach the hard /g/ first — goat, go, garden — and leave the soft one until your child is reading words, when it stops being confusing and starts being a rule.

Should we teach the round g or the loopy one?

The simple round g with a straight tail, every time. The loop belongs to joined-up handwriting, years later, and it is much harder for a young hand to control.

What age is letter G right for?

Most children are ready to trace a big capital somewhere between three and four, and lowercase a little later. If the hand is not ready yet, do it in the air, in sand or with playdough — it all counts.
