Letter U worksheets, and how U is actually built
The capital U is one stroke down, round the bottom and back up — like a cup — and that movement is the whole trick. A child who knows the movement can write the letter; a child who only knows what it looks like is copying a picture and hoping.
So here are two U sheets that print free from this page, and underneath, how to teach the shape and the sound without one getting in the way of the other.
1. Trace U and u
Every letter is dashed, and the first one in each row carries the numbered starting dot, so the pencil always begins in the same place. Capital first: it is the simpler shape for a young hand.

How U is built
Capital U: one stroke down, round the bottom and back up — like a cup. Lowercase u: the same cup, smaller, and then a short line straight down on the right. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.
U belongs to the cup family: u shares its rounded bottom with j and with the bowl of y. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.
The sound comes first
U says /u/ — a short sound from the middle of the mouth, as in umbrella. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of umbrella, up, under, uncle, us and umpire — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.
The usual wobble: u and n
They are the same shape upside down: u holds water, n does not. Say it out loud — a cup you could drink from — and let your child check which way up theirs is.
Three U activities with no printing at all
- Hold a cup and trace the u shape round the bottom of it with a finger.
- Stand under an umbrella and say up, under, us.
- Draw u and n next to each other and ask which one would hold the rain.
Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.
Where U sits in the order
We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit U in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.
When U is comfortable, move on to letter V.

Why does u sound different in umbrella and in unicorn?
Because u has a short sound and a long one. Teach the short /u/ first — up, under, us — and leave the long one for when your child is reading whole words.

Two: the cup, then the short line down the right. Children often miss the second one, which leaves something closer to a v.
