How H is built

Capital H: two long lines straight down, side by side, and then one line across the middle joining them. Lowercase h: one long line down, then back up halfway and over into a bump that lands on the line. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.

H belongs to the down-stroke family: h, b, k, l, p and r all begin with that same firm line pulled down. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.

The sound comes first

H says /h/ — a soft puff of air with no voice at all, as in hat. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of hat, house, hand, horse, hug and hen — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.

The usual wobble: h and n

An h is an n with a tall back. If your child's h keeps coming out short, start the pencil higher up than feels necessary — at the top of the tallest letter on the page.

Three H activities with no printing at all

• Breathe on a cold window and draw an h in the mist with a finger — h is the letter you can see.
• Build a capital H out of three pencils on the table.
• Say hat, hug, hop with your hand in front of your mouth and feel the puff of air.

Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.

Where H sits in the order

We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit H in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.

When H is comfortable, move on to letter I.

My child cannot hear the /h/ sound. Is that normal?

Yes, completely. It is a breath rather than a noise, so it is one of the quietest sounds in English. Feeling it on a hand works better than listening for it.

Is the lowercase h really one stroke?

It can be, and that is the fastest version: down, back up the same line, and over. Two separate strokes are fine too if that is easier for now.

What age is letter H right for?

Most children are ready to trace a big capital somewhere between three and four, and lowercase a little later. If the hand is not ready yet, do it in the air, in sand or with playdough — it all counts.
