How Y is built

Capital Y: two short lines meeting in a v at the top, and then one line straight down from the join. Lowercase y: a small cup, and then a line down the right that carries on below the line and curls left. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.

Y belongs to the pointed family for the capital: Y sits with v, w, x and z — all straight, slanted lines. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.

The sound comes first

Y says /y/ — a quick sound at the front, as in yellow. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of yellow, yes, yoyo, yawn, yoghurt and yarn — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.

The usual wobble: the tail of y

It has to drop below the line, like g and j. A y kept in the middle of the line ends up looking like a v with a hat on.

Three Y activities with no printing at all

• Play with a yoyo and say /y/ every time it comes back up.
• Yawn together — it is a y word your child can feel.
• Stand like a capital Y with both arms up in the air.

Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.

Where Y sits in the order

We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit Y in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.

When Y is comfortable, move on to letter Z.

Why does y sometimes sound like ee or igh?

Because y does two jobs: a consonant at the front of a word — yes, yellow — and a vowel at the end, as in happy or sky. Teach the front-of-the-word one first.

The tail is the tricky part. Everything above the line is just a small cup; below it, one line curling left, the same way as j and g.
