Letter E worksheets, and how E is actually built
The capital E is a line straight down, then three lines across: top, middle, bottom — and that movement is the whole trick. A child who knows the movement can write the letter; a child who only knows what it looks like is copying a picture and hoping.
So here are two E sheets that print free from this page, and underneath, how to teach the shape and the sound without one getting in the way of the other.
1. Trace E and e
Every letter is dashed, and the first one in each row carries the numbered starting dot, so the pencil always begins in the same place. Capital first: it is the simpler shape for a young hand.

How E is built
Capital E: a line straight down, then three lines across: top, middle, bottom. Lowercase e: one small line across, then a curve that starts above it and sweeps round and out. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.
E belongs to the straight-line family: E lives with F, H, I, L and T — the letters built only from straight lines. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.
The sound comes first
E says /e/ — a short, open sound, as in egg. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of egg, elephant, elbow, engine, exit and end — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.
The usual wobble: the lowercase e starting in the wrong place
It starts with the little horizontal line, not the curve. Starting with the curve makes an e that looks like a c wearing a hat.
Three E activities with no printing at all
- Lay four lolly sticks into a capital E on the floor.
- Hunt for e in every book title on the shelf — it is the most common letter in English, so it is a quick win.
- Say egg, elbow, exit and listen for the same short sound at the front.
Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.
Where E sits in the order
We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit E in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.
When E is comfortable, move on to letter F.

Very. Counting and stopping is the tricky part, not the shape. Trace it together while counting 'one, two, three' out loud for the bars.
