How R is built

Capital R: one line down, a bump at the top that closes at the middle, and then a leg kicking out to the bottom right. Lowercase r: one line down, then back up and over into a small shoulder that stops in mid-air. Say the movement out loud while your child writes — the words become the instruction, and within a week they say it themselves.

R belongs to the bump family: r starts the same way as n, m and h: down, and back up. Teaching a family together is faster than marching through the alphabet, because the hand practises one movement instead of five.

The sound comes first

R says /r/ — a growl with the tongue curled back, as in rabbit. Give the sound before the name: a child who only knows the name cannot blend it into a word, and blending is the whole point. Listen for it at the front of rabbit, red, rain, run, rocket and ring — say each word slowly and let your child catch the first sound themselves.

The usual wobble: the lowercase r stopping too late

The shoulder does not come all the way down — it stops in the air, which feels wrong to children. If it lands on the line you have an n. Say: up, over, stop.

Three R activities with no printing at all

• Roar like a lion and hold the /r/ for as long as you can.
• Make an r from a straw and a small bent bit of pipe cleaner.
• Run a race and shout /r/ /r/ /r/ at the start instead of ready-steady-go.

Ten minutes of this beats a whole worksheet at three. The paper is for the day the hand is ready.

Where R sits in the order

We do not teach A to Z in order. The first useful group is s, a, t, p, i, n, because those six already build sat, tap, pin and nap. Fit R in when it turns up in your child's name, a favourite word or a food they love — that is worth more than any alphabet chart.

When R is comfortable, move on to letter S.

How do you write the letter R?

My child cannot say /r/ properly. Should we wait on the letter?

No. /r/ is one of the last sounds to develop in speech — often not until six or seven — and that has nothing to do with recognising or writing the letter. Carry on with r on paper.

Why does the r shoulder stop in mid-air?

Because in print that is all r is: a line with a small flag. It is the one letter where stopping early is correct, which is why it takes a few goes.

What age is letter R right for?
