Why n comes out fine and m falls apart
If your child writes a neat n and then produces an m with a gap in the middle, a floating second hump, or three humps instead of two, nothing is wrong with their m. What is missing is one small movement that all six of these letters share, and that nobody usually mentions.
n, m, r, h, b and p are one family. Each starts with a straight line down. Then — and this is the part that gets skipped — the pencil goes back up the same line it just came down, without lifting, before it goes over the hill.
1. The down-stroke family
Start on the coral dot, come straight down, then back up the same line before you go over. The dot is always at the top of the first stroke.

2. Find every m

The retrace is the whole thing
Watch a child write n and you will usually see one of two approaches. Either the pencil comes down, goes back up the same line, and arcs over — one continuous movement, no lift. Or the pencil comes down, lifts off, and lands somewhere near the top to start the hill separately.
The second version works well enough for n, which is why it goes unnoticed. It falls apart at m, because now there are two hills to place by eye and no anchor to place them against. That is where the gaps and the floating humps come from.
So the thing to watch is not how the letter looks. It is whether the pencil lifts. Say it out loud as they go — down, back up, over — and keep the pencil on the paper the whole time.
The six, in the order they get easier
Each one is the same start plus something:
- n — down, back up, over. One hill. The template for the rest.
- h — the same, but the first line is tall. Nothing else changes.
- r — down, back up, and stop at the top of the hill. Half an n.
- m — down, back up, over, and over again. Two retraces in one letter, and the hills have to match.
- p — the line starts at the middle and goes below the line, then back up and the hill closes all the way round.
- b — a tall line, back up, and the hill closes into a ball. Sits opposite d, so teach it well away from d.
Teach n first and properly. Every other letter here is n with one change, and a child who owns n picks up h and r in a single sitting.
Why m is genuinely hard
It is worth saying to a struggling child that m is one of the hardest lowercase letters, because it is true and because it reframes the difficulty as normal rather than personal.
m asks for three things at once: two retraces, two arcs of matching size, and enough spatial planning to fit both in before running out of room. Plenty of five-year-olds produce a perfectly good n and an m with three humps for months.
If it keeps going wrong, shrink the job. Have them write n twice, side by side and touching. That is what m is, and seeing it built out of two n shapes usually does more than any amount of tracing.
The b and p problem
Both are in this family, and both are the ones that get reversed. There is a reason: they are the only two letters here where the hill closes all the way round into a circle, which makes them look like their mirror images d and q.
The protection is the same as the family rule. b starts with the line, from the top. d starts with a circle. p starts with a line that goes below the baseline. q starts with a circle. If the movement is learned, the mirror never comes up — there is nothing to compare.
Teach b and p a long way apart from d and q, and never on the same sheet.
Practicing the movement off the page
The retrace is a motor habit, and motor habits form faster with a big movement than a small one:
- Draw enormous n shapes on a wall with paper taped up, using the whole arm
- Do it in the air first, saying down, back up, over, in the same rhythm every time
- Trace them in a tray of salt or dry rice with one finger — the finger cannot lift by accident without you both noticing
- Roll playdough snakes and build n and m from them, so the shape is made before it is drawn
The rhythm matters as much as the shape. A phrase said the same way each time becomes part of the movement, and children start muttering it to themselves weeks later while they write.
When to move on
When the pencil stops lifting. Not when the letter looks neat — neatness comes months after the movement is right, and chasing it early usually just adds pressure.
A child who writes a slightly wobbly n in one continuous stroke is in a better place than one who produces a tidy n out of two separate pieces, because only the first one is going to transfer to m.
Questions parents ask
Why does my child's m have three humps?
Almost always because the pencil is lifting between strokes, so there is no anchor to place the humps against and no way to tell when two have been drawn. Keeping the pencil down through the retrace fixes it more reliably than practicing m itself.
